Performance Enhancing Drugs Performance-enhancing drugs (PED s) have been an issue for many decades now for the medical and sports field. Olympic and professional athletes have been using them to gain an upper hand on the competition, but some may ask if it s really worth it? Studies show that performance-enhancing drugs have been proven to negatively affect the health of athletes who take them. Simply put, performance-enhancing drugs could either improve athletic performance or can be extremely dangerous, in certain situations, deadly. There have been strict rules and drug testing in the professional sporting organizations, as well as in world competitions. Peptide hormones, growth factors, and related substances are compounds that include treatment of cancer or aiding those born prematurely. The presence of the abnormal concentration of a hormone, it s metabolites and it s ratios or markers all contain prohibited substances that include human growth hormone (hGH), erythropoietin (EPO), insulin, human chronic gonadotrophin (HCG) and adrenocorticotrophin (ACTH). The effects one may have using this is a stroke, heart attack, thyroid problems, loss of vision, headaches, diabetes, arthritis, and severe headaches. In the article, â€Å"Performance Enhancing Drugs, Paternalism, Meritocracy, and Harm to Sports† by Nicholas Dixon, argues that PED s should remain banned due to the many different medical risks one could develop when taking drugs mostly, anabolic steroids. Anabolic steroids might be the most popular performance-enhancing drugs out there today, but most definitely isn t the only one being used.
